Give "Dog Problems" a hand

The Format have a habit of making me love them more than I had the day before. Most recently, this happened with their video for the title track of their newest album, "Dog Problems." The song is deceivingly upbeat for a caustic indictment of singer Nate Ruess's ex-girlfriend (titled for the notion that getting a dog might solve their relationship issues). The bridge, however, features plaintive strings and keys to evoke the sadness of love lost.

The video stars a hand (presumably Ruess's; it's wearing a tiny version of his signature hat) acting out the lyrics literally, similar to how the singer performs on stage. It has all the normal video conventions -- walking dejectedly through the city, for example -- just with a small five-fingered protagonist. My favorite things about the video:
  • Sesame Street-esque wall and spelling
  • A chorus of hands shouting and dancing
  • Harmony against a black background, "Bohemian Rhapsody"-style
I wonder if he got a manicure for this.

If only all music videos were that poignant, but then they'd still be playing them on mtv and vh1 and we'd be missing out on all that wonderfully vapid programming.

Thank you for bringing this to my attention. I have since acquired the CD by a perfectly legitimate means of international procurement...yes.

I enjoy it. Thank you.
